Review by Stefan

My passion for US Metal still runs high, this kind of music came into my life in the early 80’s, through the years the connection with this awesome gem has only grown. My daily dose of US Metal has become indispensable and shouldn’t miss it for the world’s money. So my slogan is still, US Metal until the day they bury me ! My list of favorite US Metal bands has taken on a large proportion over the years, way too many to mention them all but true fact is that Chastain belongs to the top of that list ! Gaining a reputation of one of the greatest guitar players ever, David T. Chastain started his own band back in 1984.

As if it was yesterday I remember very well their debut record “Mystery Of Illusion” (Shrapnel Records ’85). The almighty Leather Leone on vocals, Mike Skimmerhorn as bassist and drummer Fred Coury delivered a great performance, it became an album that should have been mentioned in music history books to this day, but unfortunately it didn’t happen. An undeserved and undervalued thing in my opinion, especially when you know that Chastain released plenty of more world class albums after their debut.

I’m talking about the following efforts: “Ruler Of The Wasteland” (1986), “The 7th. Of never (’87), “The Voice Of The Cult” (’88) and of course “For Those Who Dare” (’90) ! More albums like “Sick Dementia” and “In Dementia” saw daylight in ‘95/’97, behind the microphone we had Kate French (now in Vainglory), she replaced Leather Leone who left the Chastain ranks back in 1992. Kate’s a top notch singer as well, she entered the Chastain ranks after the band’s status was on hold for a couple of years.

About “For Those Who Dares”, this one originally saw daylight through Roadrunner Records in 1990. This fifth Chastain output was a killer, a must-have for all those hooked on US Metal music. David’s talented skills as guitar player, songwriter and leader of the pack transformed this piece into a true spectacle with overwhelming vocal lines, scorching shred guitar work supported by the most talented bass and drum works. Music for which I humbly bow my head, my kinda Metal for sure ! IMO: These kinds of albums are rare these days.

Now I’d like to present the 30th. Anniversary Edition of “For Those Who Dare”, courtesy of the house of Divebomb Records ! When I hear the original version and start comparing the production I have to admit that the current edition sounds a lot better. With thanks to Steve Fontano (Prairie Sun Studios) and the man behind the mastering duties Jaimie King you’ll hear an improved version of “FTWD”, with all due respect for the original ‘Roadrunner Records’ release. More balance, more depth across all of the songs, at this very own moment listening to the album and feeling awesome. Talking about my daily shot of US Metal, this one came in well !

You’ll be spoiled with 10 original songs plus 2 bonus tracks, packaged alongside a detailed booklet, reprocessed and expended from Divebomb Initial 2010 reissue to include additional pictures and an exclusive interview with the one and only, Mr. DT Chastain himself, and one of my all-time favorite female singers Leather Leone ! This edition has something special, gives a unique feeling and leaves no doubt that a copy like this should not be missing in your US Metal collection. Make sure to order right away, you won’t regret it. Proceed at:  With a band like Chastain you’ll never be faced with unpleasant surprises. US Metal Still Reigns Supreme !

My rating: 98/100 (Outstanding, high valued albums & Classic Ones… a direct purchase is advisable !)
